Moeller drops #1 St. Edward

Crusaders Win!!!

What a spectacular weekend it was for the Moeller family! You can just feel the momentum around campus, as we inch closer and closer to the postseason.

The football team has been on a roll, and they were faced with another tough challenge this past Saturday.

Moeller traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for a showdown with the #1 High School team in the State, the St. Edward Eagles.

This is the 2nd time this season the Crusaders were faced with the challenge of trying to knock off the top team in Ohio. The Crusaders lost to St. Xavier back in September, who was ranked #1 at the time.

However, this time around the result would be different, as Moeller was able to escape northern Ohio with a 28-21 win in overtime.

The Crusaders defeated the Eagles for the first time since 2009, ending the 10-game win streak St. Edward had over Moeller.

Moeller is now 2-0 vs teams from Cleveland this season, beating St. Ignatius 2 weeks ago and St. Edward this past week, both in overtime. These wins marked the first time in program history that Moeller beat both St. Ignatius and St. Edward in the same season.

This team faced a heartbreaking overtime loss to Elder back on October 2nd but has responded with two of the biggest wins for Moeller football in quite some time!

Coach Elder has this team playing with heart and firing on all cylinders. Winning back-to-back football games and playing 3 overtime finishes in a row.

This matchup with the Eagles was a hard fought, tough football game. St. Edward got out to a 14-6 lead early in the 2nd quarter.

Moeller was able to respond by scoring right before halftime and converting on the 2-point conversion to tie the game.

Quarterback Noah Geselbracht lead the Crusader offense straight down the field and capped the drive off with a 5-yard touchdown strike to Tennel Bryant.

Geselbracht put together another balanced performance going 23-33 for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was also a big game from tight end, Josh Kattus, who caught a season high 11 balls from Geselbracht for 118 yards.

St. Edward struggled to stop the Moeller tight end. Kattus made big play after big play to keep numerous Crusader drives alive. It definitely helps the offense when you have a big target like Josh Kattus always open across the middle of the field.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, the Crusaders would find themselves down 21-14 early in the 4th. With 4 minutes remaining in the football game, Moeller would score to tie it up at 21-21.

Crusader running back Alec Weeder, who had 8 carries for 37 yards and 2 touchdowns scored from 4 yards out. Moeller struggled to run the football for most of the game but was able to grind out tough yards when they needed it most.

The offense performed as expected, by limiting past mistakes from the last couple weeks.

The Crusader defense also battled all game as they were able to keep a very explosive Eagles offense in check. St. Edward quarterback Christian Ramos struggled to throw the football against a Moeller secondary, who did a great job of showing Ramos numerous different looks.

Even though St. Edward found success running the football, they were one dimensional for most of the football game.

Ramos had very little time to throw in the pocket due to the pressure provided from the Crusader defensive front. Moeller recorded 4 sacks and several hurries, which made it difficult for St. Edward to gain any momentum through the air.

The Eagles were forced to keep the football on the ground, so by the end of the game their offense became very predictable.

With all that being said, Moeller still found themselves in a tied ball game at the end of regulation.

The Crusaders would get the football first to start their 3rd overtime game in 3 weeks. Moeller was able to find the endzone on the 2nd play from scrimmage.

Noah Geselbracht found Tennel Bryant on a beautifully run corner route, for their second touchdown connection of the game.

Moeller would take a 28-21 lead in overtime, now only needing 1 more stop to pull off the upset victory.

St. Edward tried to run a wheel route with their running back on their first offensive play in overtime; however, the Moeller defense was ready for it.

Mitch McNulty was in the right place at the right time and made a perfect play on the football. McNulty picked off the St. Edward quarterback to win the game for the Crusaders.

What a finish it was as Moeller knocked off #1 in another dramatic ending.

"I've watched the play over and over on film. I saw the running back coming my way and knew I had to make a play," said McNulty.

What a night it was to be a Moeller Crusader football fan. The scene after the game was one these players, especially the seniors, will never forget.

Senior quarterback Noah Geselbracht was quoted after the big win: "I think this win was huge for the Moeller football program. The team knew these last couple games were going to be tough and we stuck together as a team and never gave up, we are starting to play our best football at the right time. I think this season in general is starting to put Moeller football back on the map!"

It's been a while since Moeller football has been in this position. The rest of the state is starting to take notice.

Moeller will look to keep the momentum rolling, as they will travel to Detroit, Michigan this Friday to take on Martin Luther King Jr. High School.

Sophomore running back Jordan Marshall said, "St. Eds was a big win, but we are not done yet, the season isn't close to being over."

Moeller will need another team effort if they want to leave Michigan with a win and momentum heading into the playoffs.

The excitement is real at Moeller and the Crusaders are back like they never left.
